Slim's Cyder Co.

Slim's Cyder Co. are an outfit to be found pluckin', twangin' and squeezing at any venue that will have them. They're a six piece with the welcome sounds of accordion and fiddle boosting the usual format. The Cyder Co., who's version of Howlin' Wolf's, 'Built for Comfort and Not Speed' could easily be applied to accordionist and vocalist Slim's enormous frame, are an energetic ensemble, mixing blues, cajun and country. Slim is keen to emphasise the close links between country and blues, as is the band's Patsy Cline-like second vocalist, Chrissie Lane.

"Country and blues are similar, in that both are forms of musical expression from downtrodden, depressed people, the songs being about anger, frustration and surviving." Over the years however, this side of country has been neglected in favour of the image. This is something the Cyder Co. are happy to rectify. Chrissie feels that there should be more women with attitude in country-orientated music. "Dolly Parton has breast implants, I have milk for my baby, but I still get out there and do it,"she says.

And do it they do, in their own, unique way. Slim sums it up, "Country, like rhythm and blues has a very wide spectrum for interpretation and it's up to us to take it out of the glitterball surroundings and into people's hearts and minds."
